Talent

Today Kai learned how to pick his nose and Jett learned how to unbuckle his carseat all by himself.

It was a big day.

Jett Got a Hold of the Camera

Sometimes you'll do anything to get your kid to put on his shoes, to get in his car seat, to sit down in the grocery cart, to leave play group - geesh - all the other kids left quickly and quietly twenty minutes ago, let's get moving!!

What I've done a few times lately, which I said I'd never do, is let Jett take pictures with my cell phone. I cringe, I hand it over, I cringe, and the moment starts to get a little easier. Later, when he isn't looking, I sneak my phone back and scroll through all of the pictures he's taken. Sometimes they tell a little story of our day.

(I just reread this post, and realize there are probably more pictures here than necessary, but hey, he's my babe, and he takes good pictures)!

No wonder he always wants to ride in the front seat. The view is so much better up there.

It's hard to be so short.

the photographer himself

He loved that meat display.

Have I mentioned that even though we bought this car in August,
he still calls it the "newww car"? See his reflection in the door?

This staircase isn't nearly so ethereal in real life, but maybe in Jett's eyes...

Getting abstract at play group.

Caught talking to another kid at play group.

This is the picture that started his camera obsession. I had to get a picture of that hair, and he had to get a picture of everything else.

Nine Months

Happy Birthday, Kai! Today you are nine months old.

The day we brought you home from the hospital I laid my face next to yours and put my lips near your lips and I breathed in your sweet breath so your sweet cells would still be mixed up with mine. Now you're here in the world, warmed up in the sun coming through the window, eating applesauce, laughing with Jett, pulling my hair, smiling at Daddy. Nine months.

You have two little teeth on the bottom, and a smile that won't quit. When you're in your highchair you like to shake your head side to side and sing, and we all respond. We all eat dinner while doing impressions of Stevie Wonder, and you laugh and laugh at what you can get us to do.

You make all kinds of happy noises, but your favorite way to talk is to stick your tongue in and out, in and out. Jett and I spend half of our day talking to you that way and we love it.

You love to be upside down. You sit on my lap and throw your head backwards, begging me to tickle your belly. Your mouth is open in a happy squeal and I kiss your chin, that cute chin. We do it over and over.

We are rarely apart, and I just can't believe how much time we get to spend together. You are in my arms most of the day. You are so snuggly, resting your head on my shoulder, belly to belly.

When you're not in my arms you're on the move, swimming like a fish all through the house. Now my pockets are always full of lint and crumbs and little dried pieces of our hardwood floor. That's just me, keeping your immediate floor space clean and safe. Jett is amazingly conscientious about picking up his crumbs so you don't choke on them. We are ok for now though, because you haven't quite mastered that pincer grasp yet. You just point your little finger out to touch, and I run over and whisk away whatever speck you've found.

We all love to put you in the bath with Jett. You both get so excited to be in there together. You splash Jett and he laughs. He zerberts your belly and you laugh. It's one big laughfest in the tub. Then I get to pick up little naked you, and pat your little smooth butt, and kiss your little chubby belly, and feel your skin on my face and my arms and my hands and it's heaven.

Here you are - nine months in and nine months out. What a milestone! Welcome to the world, Baby Kai! You made it! We love you!

Wanna come over wanna ride my bike wanna snack wanna play with my toys wanna be my friend?

I have a friend.

She lives in my neighborhood and our kids are the same age and we're the same age and she likes my kids. She likes them so much she let them spend the night. Their first slumber party!

She hosted my babes' first sleep over and in the morning she brushed Jett's hair and didn't tell me how Jett just stood still for her and let her brush it. She hosted my babies' first sleep over and she only let them watch one tv show and she didn't brag about not needing to turn on the tv to keep the two-year-olds from fighting. She let my kids spend the night, and when I came over at 11pm to pick up Kai (who wasn't sleeping through the night that week) she opened the bedroom door to show me how cute Jett looked in his sleep.

I have a friend in my neighborhood with kids. She's still breastfeeding her nine-month old and she's not afraid to take her two kids on the bus and she knows her way around the zoo and her son likes to share and she brings the best snacks to play group and those snacks are not always healthy and she knows all the other parents and nannies and she has totally figured out the public school system and all I have to do now is not smother her with my excitement over the fact that I have a friend and that friend is her.

Why do I feel like the only one who gets it?

Oh, I see. Two hours shocks you?
You get your kid out the door in 15 minutes? You must be very organized. Of course, your kid doesn't wake up until 8:00 in the morning, so you can shower and dress and eat breakfast before he wakes up, lucky you. And you don't have to pack a diaper bag. Or put the stroller in the car. And since your kid gets up and out within 15 minutes you only have one diaper change to get through, not four. And sometimes you feed your kid a breakfast bar in the car, just admit it. Oh yeah, and you only have one kid, and he isn't attached to your breast half the morning.
Geesh.

A Great Day to be a Two Year Old

It's Chicago. It's February. It's sixty-two degrees. What else could we do but get outside? There were leaves to pick up, sticks to throw, puddles to run through, and an entire zoo to explore. It felt like spring and we felt fantastic. We ran and ran and ran all morning, and the air was warm as we rushed through it.
